What are some other examples of topics that, well gorsh-darn, the algorithm just had to push 'em down so we can all get along?

HN is an echo chamber.

If the institution by the people and for the people has flaws, then we the people should work together to improve it.

We would rather not throw all of our hopes and dreams at the feet of greedy capitalists who would sell their own grandma's walker for a powerball ticket.

A gizmodo commenter made a good suggestion: replace "maniac" with "psychopath."

I endorse this because mania is a medically recognized condition that can be managed successfully with treatment.

Do we have evidence that MA is bipolar or otherwise verifiably maniacal? Or is he just another unscrupulous capitalist? I think it's the latter.

MA: If you're reading this, just know that whatever trendy "ism" is making its rounds at the yacht club will not justify the awful, inhumane business decision you are about to make.

Yeah, and that made me wonder whether survivorship bias could be at play. That is, populations at lower elevations see less opportunities for suicide due to individuals dying of things like heart disease, etc., before they have a chance to off themselves at a later age.

But they do mention that they "[controlled] for percent of age >50 yr." Does that imply that, per county, they excluded high-elevation suicides that wouldn't have happened at lower elevations, using known mortality rates for common causes-of-death for age > 50 individuals?

I'm sure the answer is in the paper somewhere, but I need to get back to work. :-)

I used to share your confusion on this topic, but I think I got it:

General Relativity posits that gravity embodies both of those qualities you mentioned.

It is a force that bends space and dilates time.

They criticized Google for holding a value they perceived to be at odds with the underlying economic system.

During a discussion of said company's defiance of a federal judge, such a critique seems pertinent to me!

We have continually observed the most powerful actors in our system abusing it in consistent ways: cornering markets, becoming monopolies, bullying smaller companies, constructing walled gardens, diminishing the concept of consumer ownership, etc.

I think we ought to allow comments like theirs in discussions like this.

TIL that only two minivans (the Sienna and the Pacifica) offer AWD. That surprised me!

And incidentally (getting back to the original point of the article), both models feature a pretty flat front-end for a minivan. I wouldn't be surprised if they are considered among the least pedestrian-safe vehicles of the class.

Are you referring to the Cassava Sciences fraud? All of that was related to a specific treatment that a specific researcher was trying to push through FDA trials.

I would consider that an isolated incident, similar to the "vaccines cause autism" researcher who was discredited long ago (and hopefully the Cassava guy will be, too).

Mmm, I await the article.

You fixed nothing.

I had never even heard of this, and I've watched dozens and dozens of episodes of Spacetime!

I'm shocked YouTube didn't steer me to this sister channel. Thank you!
