jonbischke's comments

jonbischke | 3 years ago | on: Ask HN: What books helped you in your entrepreneurship journey?

The Hard Thing About Hard Things. We bought a copy for every employee at my last company to help convey the messages that startups are not designed to be tons of fun but rather a tough (yet rewarding) grind. This was especially important for people who were coming from bigger companies to understand.

jonbischke | 3 years ago | on: The hardest people for founders to hire are so called C-level executives

One measure of a high-quality C-level performer is the quality of their teams. The best C-level people can bring in very high-quality managers and individual contributors underneath them. Below average C-level people really struggle on this front.

Also, for some C-level roles there are good and objective ways to measure performance. For example, for a Chief Revenue Officer you have (obviously) revenue. There are a ton of confounding variables of course but in general CROs who consistently out-perform plan are better than those who consistently under-perform plan.

Entelo - San Francisco (SOMA), CA - Full-time - http://www.entelo.com/ ; ONSITE only, no remote at the moment.

Our mission is to help organizations build diverse, cohesive and better teams. We've been building a variety of hiring solutions to help companies like Tesla, Zenefits and Lyft leverage the wealth of information online to find amazing prospective employees and make better hiring decisions. The sales and marketing worlds have many solutions that enable them to be more efficient and productive and it is our belief that we can adapt the best that sales and marketers have to recruiting/talent departments.

We're currently looking for a variety of positions including:

-Sr. Backend Engineers: Our backend team deals with crawling, parsing, normalization and aggregation of hundreds of millions of social profiles (i.e. Linkedin, Github, Twitter) and use complex algorithmic and statistical methods to match disparate social profiles. We use a Ruby/Postgres architecture for the backend and have dabbled with using Go.

-DevOps Engineer: We're looking for our first dedicated engineer to own DevOps for the long term. We take a software-centric (as opposed to an ops-centric) approach to DevOps, and have every engineer setup on PagerDuty in case something breaks in the middle of the night (hopefully we'll avoid that!). We use a variety of modern technologies including Docker, AWS, Rails, ElasticSearch, Kubernetes and other tools such as New Relic, Loggly and PagerDuty.

-Lead Data Engineer: We're looking for someone to help us continue to build out our analytics framework for prediction of when people are most likely to be looking for a new opportunity. We use Amazon Redshift for data warehousing but are open to those that have extensive experience with "big data" stacks (Hadoop, Spark, Storm, Kafka, etc.)

If you're interested in any of our open positions, you can reach out to me directly (I'm the founder) at jon at entelo dot com

jonbischke | 10 years ago | on: First Round 10 Year Project

Removing Uber seems to defeat the purpose of this a bit. After all, the goal of venture investing is pretty much "find the Ubers". Most of the "rules" don't actually apply to Uber. For example:

Rule 1 - Uber had no female founders.

2 - Travis and Garrett were "older" founders.

3 - Neither went to a "top school".

4 - Neither worked for one of the name brand companies listed.

5 - Both were repeat founders. If included, FRC's investments in repeat founders would likely perform much better than first-time founders.

8 - Uber is based in the Bay Area. If included, FRC's investments in "Big Tech Hubs" would likely perform much better than outside of tech hubs.

A couple of the other rules might also not apply to Uber (don't have enough data to assess).

On the whole this is a well-intentioned exercise but I wonder if the exclusion of Uber doesn't lead to wrong conclusions.

Entelo - San Francisco (SOMA), CA - Full-time - http://www.entelo.com/ ; We're currently only hiring Onsite in San Francisco, so can't support remote employees at the time.

Our mission is to help organizations build diverse, cohesive and better teams. We've been building a variety of hiring solutions to help companies big and small leverage the wealth of information online to find amazing prospective employees and make better hiring decisions. The sales and marketing worlds have many solutions that enable them to be more efficient and productive and it is our belief that we can adapt the best that sales and marketers have to recruiting/talent departments.

We owe a ton to the Hacker News community as we've made multiple hires through our interactions with engineers here and I personally have learned a ton from the HN community.

We're hiring aggressively on our engineering team and are looking for collaborative, thoughtful and resilient individuals to help us improve the way all organizations think and approach recruiting. Our open roles:

-Sr. Backend Engineers/Architects (Salary Range: $140k-$180k) We're looking for people that are interested in our backend challenges. Our backend team deals with crawling, parsing and normalization of hundreds of millions of social profiles (i.e. Linkedin, Github, Twitter) and use complex algorithmic and statistical methods to match disparate social profiles.

We've used a combination of Scala, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, AWS and Redshift although have seriously considered using both Go and Postgres.

-Full-stack Ruby Developers (Salary Range: $110k-$160k) Our full-stack team deals with a variety of challenges from the frontend to the database. They build new products, improve ElasticSearch, handle DevOps by committee and are heavily involved in making product decisions. The team is highly collaborative and we're looking for individuals you genuinely working with their colleagues to come up with solutions. Our full-stack team gets involved with many of of the other teams including but not limited to Product, Sales and Customer Success.

Our stack includes Ruby on Rails, MySQL, ElasticSearch, Redis, Javascript, AWS and Docker among other technologies.

Last thing I'd like to mention is that we deeply invest in our employees' professional growth to the point where we offer every employee a $1k annual stipend to use on whatever courses/conferences/training will help them improve. And for those engineers who care about becoming leaders one day, we live and breath recruiting which is one of the most important skills for budding engineering leaders- I guarantee you'll learn more about it here than anywhere else :)

I'm the founder and if you're interested in any opportunities with us, you can reach me directly at jon at entelo dot com

Entelo - San Francisco (SOMA), CA - Full-time - http://www.entelo.com/ ; we're unfortunately are not hiring remote or part-time at the moment as we're committed to building a strong internal engineering culture at this stage before opening the doors more.

Entelo's mission is to help organizations build great teams. Our goal is to help any organization recruit for any of their open roles. We've currently built a powerful people search engine that indexes hundreds of millions of social profiles and looks for signals to predict who may be more receptive to a career change. It's our belief that the the HR/Recruiting world deserves many of the same powerful tools that sales and marketing organizations have had, and it's our responsibility to deliver on this mission.

The Hacker News community has been great to us as we've made 4 engineering hires through the HN community. We care about building a thoughtful and considerate engineering environment with true work-life balance and personal flexibility (to my knowledge, no one works more than 50 hours in the office and we're flexible with work schedules).

We're currently looking to rapidly expand the engineering team. Here are a few of our open roles:

-Sr. Backend Engineer/Architect. Salary Range: $140k-180k

We're looking for someone to advance our backend infrastructure. We index hundreds of millions of profiles, and this requires crawling, parsing, normalization (data is semi-structured) and matching of these social profiles. We're currently using a stack that includes Scala, MongoDB, Golang, Java, ElasticSearch and AWS although we've been considering using Amazon's new Postgres solution.

-DevOps Engineer. Salary Range: $110k-140k

We're looking for our first dedicated DevOps engineer as we've currently been doing DevOps by committee. We're looking for someone that isn't rigid in thought and is open to using tools/technologies to solve our internal upkeep problems. We take a software-centric approach to DevOps and do try to use a modern stack here: Docker, New Relic, Loggly, PagerDuty, Rails, ElasticSearch but we're open to those that may have more traditional DevOps experience but open to using newer technologies.

-Full-Stack Rubyists. Salary Range: $100k-$170k (wide range depending on experience and ability to play some of the other roles)

We're always in the market for talented full-stack engineers. Our stack includes Ruby on Rails, MySQL, AWS, Javascript, Bootstrap, Redis, ElasticSearch

If you're interested, please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly at jon at entelo.com. I'm the CEO of Entelo and happy to be a part of this community.

Entelo - San Francisco (SOMA), CA - Full-time - http://www.entelo.com/

Entelo's mission is to help organizations build great teams by allowing them to search for talented people regardless of where they represent themselves on the web. We index hundreds of millions of social profiles and provide a powerful search tool that predicts which candidates are more likely to look for new opportunities and provide collaborative tools to help recruiters and hiring managers recruit more efficiently. Sales and Marketing departments have had a plethora of tools to help them over the years, but recruiting/HR has notoriously been behind- we're seeking to change that by providing solutions to improve both efficiency and efficacy to recruiters.

We're helping 200+ companies with their hiring needs including fast-growth companies such as Facebook, Quora, Github and Lyft. We've been huge fans of Hacker News as the community has been great to learn from and four of our recent engineering hires came through Hacker News threads!

Our Tech Stack: Ruby, Scala, Rails, AWS, MySQL, Mongo, Redis, Elasticsearch, Redshift and Docker

We care deeply about professional growth and have an annual $1k allowance for all employees to spend on their own professional development (courses, conferences, coaching, etc.). Additionally, we're located in Soma near BART and CalTrain and have a number of perks including health/dental/vision and heavily subsidized gym membership.

We're looking for sharp, collaborative engineers for a variety of roles including:

-Sr. Backend Engineer/Architect: Ideally looking for someone that can own our backend stack in regards to crawling, parsing and normalization of the hundreds of millions of profiles we index. We use a combination of Scala/Mongo/Haskell for our backend today, but are open to other technologies including Golang. ElasticSearch experience is also a huge plus.

-Data Engineer: We're looking for our first Data Engineer to be our first dedicated data-team hire. Ideally this person has experience with data warehousing, data mining and building out data pipelines and has experience with storage (MySQL, MongoDB, Redis), search technologies (elasticsearch, solr or lucene)and stuff in the MapReduce family (Hadoop, HFS, etc.)

-DevOps Engineer: Looking for our first DevOps engineer as DevOps is currently handled by committee. We are looking for someone that comes from more of a development background as opposed to operations as we're an AWS shop and currently use Docker.

-Full-Stack Rubyists. Experience with ElasticSearch is a huge plus.
