I would think he would consider his adopted sister as his second sister.

on: Sherlock Holmes averts world war using mathematics
I find it most annoying when a computer is used in basically any TV show or movie. The actors always look to just be tapping on the keys at random, often hitting completely irrelevant keys to the task at hand. It doesn't ruin the scene for me but it does not make it as good as it can be. The attention to detail in this film made it more enjoyable.

She clearly explained why it was not do-able, and then he goes on to saying that it is. Hire those "wiz kids" I'm sure they can do it!

on: Dark Sky - Weather Prediction, Reinvented
Even the name of the app points to its competition. If the sky is dark I am most likely to bring an umbrella. It is however beneficial if I know I need to walk somewhere in a given amount of time. Seeing when the sky will be dark but no rain would be nice, but Ill still have my umbrella with me regardless.

on: You are the nth person alive on earth
If you look at the the chart there is a large jump in the data.
"Notes on the data: Only birth dates after 1910 can be accommodated and only countries with populations of more than 100,000 people are included. Where available, the UN's medium variant and average figures from 2005-2010 have been used. World and country population clocks are estimates based on the latest UN figures and growth rates. They may not tally precisely with other clocks because of the way this application is configured."

on: Poll: How much do you make as a programmer?
One key aspect of statistics is randomly sampling, this poll has bias for sure. It is still interesting to see what HNers make with respect to where the live. It would also be interesting to see salary data compared to hours worked per week and self-employed or not.

on: 50% of All Workers Made Less than $26,000 in 2010
I'd like to see this data over a longer time period. Or compared to a similar time span around the Great Depression. Similarly, I'd like to see data on a global scale. I'd imagine the gap is continuously widening. Markets constantly shift, this may be a second re-adjustment from the dot.com bubble, just the "99 percent" are adjusting as the 1% goes the other way.

on: Louisiana Makes It Illegal To Use Cash For Secondhand Sales
I would hope that it applies to everyone or the law would be miss a portion of the illegal activity they are attempting to capture. Criminals will probably still operate in cash and those that are law-abiding now have to go through the hassle of documentation.

Why does it have to be a throwable ball? I'd imagine a much better picture if I had the camera on an extendable stick. Perhaps offering both options. I also wish the stitching was better, Microsoft's Photosynth app does an amazing job. An option to be able to lock exposure may help the quality.

Yes, Watson had a major advantage at buzzing in but he was also capable of understanding or computing the questions. This is significant as the questions on Jeopardy aren't simply x + y = z but contain the complexities of the English language.

on: Google Joins Apple in Push for Tax Holiday
This is the exact sort of "tax loophole" that should be put to an end. I almost wish someone pushed back by proposing a raise in taxes for such behavior, and maybe next time these big companies would think twice before they tried to avoid paying taxes that everyone else does.

It would be fun to use but I wonder about the practical uses, if I flew to work with it am I going to be able to bring anything with me, or am I going to look like I just walked through a tornado, and finally where do I put it when I do get to work?
