on: Ask HN: It's 2021 and QuickTime still doesn't export MP4. What is going on?
iMovie can export to mp4, so I don't think it's an attempt at lock-in. I would guess it's just that like a lot of the macOS utilities, QuickTime gets very little development focus as of late.

on: Courage
I think there is some truth to the "we needed to make space for the other changes we wanted to make" argument, but I think that applies even more so to the next iPhone (8?). I think Apple made the 7 as good as they could, but in some sense it's the sacrificial lamb for what they want to do next.

on: Dark Sky has a new owner
I've found the near term forecast a bit flaky in New York as well, though I've always imagined the city to be particularly unpredictable. I still use it regularly, but I hope they'll devote some of their new resources to improvements to the core forecast algorithm.

on: A Hair Salon Guru’s Next Big Thing: Ending Shampoo
I haven't used shampoo in over two years. I realized I was doing just what the article describes- removing all the oils with shampoo then adding them back with another product. Now I just rinse it daily. That may not work for some hair types, and I don't know if it would be enough if I had longer hair, but it's much less fuss for a result I'm happier with.

on: Spies Like Us: How We All Helped Build Prism
Seems like this article plays a bit loose with the facts. Apache Hadoop and MapReduce are based on Google white papers, but Google didn't actually develop either. And is it that Google couldn't afford Oracle software, or they knew they could build something better?
However, the main thrust is valid: the same data that is valuable to Facebook and Google (and their advertisers) is valuable to the NSA.

on: Elon Musk’s misguided attack on New York Times
It's been strange to watch this saga unfold and see how quickly the idea that this data unequivocally discredits Broder has propagated. All the data shows me is that humans aren't as precise with data as computers can be. The one solid point of dispute is that Broder says he was cleared by Tesla representatives to leave Norwich with a very low charge, and Musk says he was not. Unfortunately, unless there are recordings of the conversations released, we may never know the truth of that.
I don't find the original article damning for the Model S- it just shows that the range is definitely affected by the cold, and that there are some additional factors that need to be considered that are different from gas engines. Any person who is considering an electric car should take those factors into account- for some they will be dealbreakers, and others they won't.

You can reverse the mouse controls with the "Change Controlmode" button. I found the defaults tricky to handle as well.

on: Apple Apologizes for Its Maps Problem
There is a "Report Problem" feature where users can enter corrections or note problems. As far as simply using the app, I'm not sure either- anyone have additional insight?

on: New Apple maps app under fire from users
I looked up Sunderland Street, Tickhill, England on the new Maps app, and all the streets shown in the old Maps screenshot in the second image are there. Perhaps they've already added the missing data? The Satellite imagery in that area remains particularly bad, though. I think if Apple can iterate and improve the app quickly, the initial errors won't be that significant.
