laoba | 7 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you use Kanban at work?

We use Github’s projects AKA kanban. It’s nice to tie in directly to the repository features sure as milestones, labels, pull requests, issues, etc.

We have a board per platform. All boards have the same 5 columns:

Backlog - not in current sprint but can be added if spent complete Current Sprint - can be picked up by anyone if not assigned In progress - someone working on it Testing - Completed issues / pull requests that get assigned to a coworker to review Done - once reviewed moved here

Heard this story on the way home, made the drive hard trying to hold back the tears.

Off topic but I have two healthy daughters and a healthy wife. When I was with my wife giving birth in the hospital it was a terrifying feeling knowing much of it was out of my control. I can only imagine what these husbands went through watching their wives die right before their eyes

laoba | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up?

27 - Father of a 4 1/2 year old and a 7 month old. I really don't have time to program in the evenings much, but guess what? That's ok! You'll come to learn that there are more to life than "skilling up." I'm enjoying taking my oldest to after school activities and teaching her math a few years ahead of her age.

Programming couldn't bring me any of the happiness that being with my children could.

SEEKING WORK - Remote - Washington DC Area

I am an Objective-C developer with 4 years experience working remotely and in house. I can make you an iOS, OS X, Apple TV, or Apple Watch app, or any combination of the above. I have also dabble minimally in Node.js, so if you want to throw me some basic work at a discounted rate for Node, feel free.

My rate is $100/hr and I am currently looking to pick up around 10 hours of work per week, or more if I find time permits. I prefer to work remotely but I may be able to meet on the weekend if needed.

laoba | 11 years ago | on: How our 24 hour mini project got to #1 on Product Hunt

Off-Topic of the post, but reading this post was hard for me as I like to highlight text as I'm reading. This site will automatically put a little button underneath where my mouse was after highlight and thus whenever I tried to click off my highlight, it would automatically bring up this window to post whatever I'm highlighting. I know quite a few other people on HN have the same habit of highlighting text as we read, so surely I'm not the only one that found that quite annoying.

Keep getting redirected to someone's website. Guess you aren't filtering the input!

laoba | 11 years ago | on: Why the Facebook App Is Rated Below 2 Stars

I noticed a lot of low ratings once Facebook hid the "Most Recent" version of the feed to force you to take 3 steps.

Previously they had an easy way of switching between the two all within the first view that showed by default, now it's just a pain in the ass and it seems like none of the devs actually use it.

laoba | 11 years ago | on: Study: Chicago red light cameras provide few safety benefits

I don't know how common these lights are around the world (I have never seen them in the US but have not been EVERYWHERE), but in China I regularly saw lights that also had a timer to the side of it counting down so the change from yellow -> red was more easily expectable. I think this would work rather well if we were all really concerned with safety.

laoba | 11 years ago | on: Show HN: We've been working on this idea, would love feedback

A complaint about the site: I like to move my mouse near the section I'm reading, but it keeps fading out the part I'm trying to read.

Also, I still don't really understand what does this do? You only give me a form but no additional information.

"and when you've got Netflix why bother?)"

Because Netflix takes forever to get the latest movies, and is filled with terrible straight to dvd movies! :)

If I was paypal, and decided to reverse the freeze, I would immediately unfreeze it, and then take the time to write something up.

From a PR perspective, I would think it would be better to say "We wanted to unfreeze immediately so they could start take donations again." rather than "We kept it frozen until we had time to write an apology."

Not saying we're definitely going to get one, but I could see why it might not come immediately.
