on: Please let this not be the future of reading on the web
Yeah, that's awful. A tip: install iCab (I'm sure there are other browsers that do the same, but I have experience with this one). You can then set your browser-id per site. So, I set in my settings that wordpress.com sends the "Safari 5/Mac" browser header, and all is fine.

Use a different browser. I use iCab and it has DuckDuckGo as a search option built in. There are also lots of other good things, like modules to post to delicious/pinboard/read it later.

on: Out Of Nowhere, The iPad Has A Real Competitor
Totally agreed. When I was shopping for a netbook I often saw people in stores who wanted a netbook, asked the store employee what they should buy, and then bought one. The same goes for camera's. Why should this be different for tablets?

I don't know how it is where you live, but around here boys and men ARE encouraged to get into education and childcare (and all my realtors were men).

What do you think a different lawyer would say/do? Mr Engelfriet is perhaps the most respected Dutch lawyer on intellectual property and other digital rights, it is not just somebody.

(Sorry, I only now saw your response). Of course coke will not erode your teeth overnight, but I never said that. It will cause dental erosion though, irreversible loss of tooth caused mostly by drinking acidic drinks like soda and apple juice. The Snopes article is too optimistic about the protective effects of enamel and saliva. See (the references at)

on: Fighting With Teenagers: A Copyright Story
In one of the comments someone asks the author if he himself never infringes on copyright. I thought his response to that was disappointing: while the majority of the imagery on my site is co-owned by me I can't vouch for all of it nor can I promise that it's all legally sound; none of that should prevent me from asking people not to trade my music illegally

on: Opera 10.6 - HTML5, and then some
And also, afaik, the only browser that doesn't allow copying in HTML. So if you want to copy information from Opera and paste it in, say, Evernote or Onenote, you lose all formatting. I know some people prefer it that way, but since Opera is highly configurable I don't understand why they don't even make it optional to copy the HTML.

Diet coke is almost or just as acidic as regular coke. It will erode your teeth. Unfortunately, definitely not something you can drink all day without any real side-effects.

on: Ocean fish could disappear in 40 years
Since most people eat too much sugar (the average American eats 20 teaspoons of added sugar each day), and only about 5% of the population is vegetarian this seems common sense to me.

What if I told you, in the US, the opposite is true? That, on average, people ate more meat in 1830
Then I would ask you what your sources are.
If people aren't eating meat, what are they eating? grains? sugars?
Vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, etc. Most people in the US who eat tons of sugar are not vegetarians.

on: I just launched my bootstrapped startup. Pray for me.
Totally agree with you that it makes a lot of sense for this kind of startup to focus on one country/region first. I do wish that startups would at least mention somewhere that they are aware of this. Something like "Sorry, US only for now" in the HN message, or a "I'm not in the US!" link on the frontpage with a message for international users, even if that message is simply that the company will focus on US customers only.

on: Ask HN: Any health tips?
Don't forget your teeth. Dental health is correlated with general health, and some dental problems are not reversible (I have severe erosion because I used to drink soft drinks all day).
Apart from diligent tooth brushing (give the inside of your teeth as much time as the outside, and brush at least 2 minutes) eating habits are very important for dental health as well.
- Limit the amount of times you eat (it is better to eat 6 candies in one sitting than it is to eat 4 pieces of candy during the day)
- Don't drink soda, but realise that for your teeth apple and other fruit juices are just as bad, so severely limit them as well.
- Don't brush your teeth immidiately after eating.
- Eat xylitol mints or chew xylitol gum after meals

on: Opera acquires e-mail service Fastmail.fm
There is a large thread about this on emaildiscussions.com:
http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showthread.php?t=59311&p...I am displeased that the FAQ doesn't mention any relevant privacy concerns, even though for many people the fact that FM was a small company with a good track record and privacy policy was an important reason to choose the service.
I also recognize the dismay of this comment:
- 'FastMail's practical approach to user privacy has always been to be extremely protective of customer privacy'.
...or we may just sell your all of your data to a third party, giving you zero days notice or an option to cancel without refund.
I really wished they would have at least given us some time to figure out what we want to do.

on: Database builder faces web-scraping lawsuit
I don't know the laws in other countries, but where I live there is a database-law that explicitly gives the owner of a database rights. For example: you cannot simply copy the phonebook and put it on the web, it doesn't matter if you use ocr-technology or hire typists to type it all in manually.

on: Tell HN: I got screwed by my employer
That being said, at least in the US, employment is at-will, and companies can fire you for pretty much any reason. This is not the case in the Netherlands (where the OP is). Employees are fairly well protected here, apart from the first month or months. That's the "probation period" (proeftijd) when an employer can fire you for any reason. It is also likely that initially you are employed for one year, which means that the company is free to fire you after that year (it's not technically firing of course, just a contract that ends). After that, people usually get a permanent contract and firing gets more difficult.
