This is a great post. I've been down a similar path. Exhausting myself financially via my first attempt at business . Learned a ton, and realized that I needed time to get somethings in order and returned to working a 9-5 only to return to solo (for the most part) consulting and working on my product.

Good luck and keep us posted!

There was a time where Google was sending them out by mail (they may still be doing this). I've also heard of people signing up and when Google gives them a call (Google usually gives you a phone call to see how everything is going with your new account) they strike a deal with the agent over the phone.

I thought that too. I like some of the JS stuff they have though. Like the pagination and date picker.

What catapulted (if anything) you to achieving so much success with tiny piano? Especially with getting to 6 million free downloads?

- Was it something that people naturally search for?

- What types of marketing/advertising did you do?

- Do any of the other apps help supplement income?

I've yet to be asked for any type of degree (I don't have one) for places I've been hired for, consulted at and/or interviewed for. I've also seen people highly decorated with degrees and certificates that can barely get an interview. I think it all depends on the person, their attitude, their ability to connect with people and willingness to learn from others.

Not sure if you've seen any of the stuff by patio11 but he's pretty much bootstrapping his companies (Bingo Card Creator & Appointment Reminder), consulting and info products and he seems to be doing pretty well for himself. He's pretty transparent about his numbers on BCC and has plenty tips for microISV's.

He blogs here: http://www.kalzumeus.com/

I've just started to ramp up on doing a SaaS/blogging about the process. It can be pretty overwhelming if its your first go 'round.

Those are some good numbers! It's key to have an open mind about learning new things to help improve your business or anything else for that matter.

I think what happens to most people following advice from others is that they are not "dumb enough" to go with it. They just look for reasons on why tactics can't work instead of really giving them a shot.
