This infographic is like watching a politician spin their selfish agenda into a "think of the children!" plea. Pretty funny actually.

Wouldn't happen. Abandoning user choice and configurability seems to be in vogue with designers these days. We're just slouching our way toward our future as passive appliance users.

(I totally agree - either turn it into a keyboard shortcut, or a reserved 16x16px spyglass icon in the upper right hand corner of the menu bar...)

I wouldn't mind moving the articles whose discussions have completely gone to seed into a separate subforum.

My favorite forums are ones that don't allow the discussion of politics or religion. The same is true for real-life discussions with acquaintances that you don't thoroughly know yet. There is nothing to be gained from a discussion when everybody's emotions are fully inflamed.

This is SOP for negotiation. Candidates do this shit too, trying to claim some sort of inflated salary boost for every thing they give up from their previous employer. It's a game and the lesser negotiator loses out.

> willing to take advantage of someone who wasn't skilled at the whole negotiating thing.

What? That is the ENTIRE POINT of negotiation. It's a game. The more skilled player wins, and it's true for job offers, house buying, car buying, street markets, everything.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. :)

What are the advantages in using a remote service for this vs. hosting them yourself? I'm somewhat averse to taking out additional dependencies on other services if no compelling reason exists.

New phone activations, maybe? Android phones work a lot better when they're paired with Google account - you might not use GMail, but you might like the backup and calendar sync features.

RTFA: "Google’s Larry Page has announced that Google+ now has 90 million users globally, doubling the number from three months ago. Page also said that G+ has a 60% ‘daily engagement’ rate. This came as a part of Google’s Q4 and fiscal year 2011 financial reports."

I can see there being a market. My mom buys all her crap if and only if it says "Mac compatible" on the box. I remind her that it's all the same hardware standards these days, but the persecution complex that was ingrained in her from the bad old 1990s--countless ADB input devices, a IIsi with its own flavor of NuBus, and then later a couple awful Performas with funky PDS slots--she's just used to assuming that hardware just won't work unless it's specifically blessed as Apple compatible.
