Reinventing the wheel. So many hours wasted on creating something that already existed in the form of PHP libraries or Python libraries that are written by much smarter folks. I tell my guys now, tools such as Ansible exist, don't try to write a whole Bash program to mimic what Ansible can do.

I used to follow their blog and they are at the forefront of the FIRE movement. No thanks. It's crazy the length they go to in order to minimize their expense. They def have a lot of help from their family. It def is click bait and what they're doing isn't "healthy" in my opinion. We let our kids be kids and that means spoiling them on many things. I'm not referring to iPhones or cars, but more like I'm not going to worry about whether I should buy two icees or one icee to split between both kids.

I looked into Nomad and my problem is having to run a minimum of six machines in a cluster for a few microservices. The argument could be made that we wouldn't need container orchestration for a few, but if we plan on scaling I don't want to have to deal with a fleet of servers. With ECS or EKS, I would only have to worry about the worker nodes so it's less to manage

sdotsen | 6 years ago | on: Having Kids

I have two kids (6 and 3) and if I had to do it all again I would not. I miss my old life. Not that it was anything special but the things we take for granted like grabbing a quick bite to eat at a diner or going to the bathroom becomes a chore. I realize it gets better but damn, years of tending to the kids flew by and I can't for the life of me recall what I did for fun.

my problem has been that I'm an overachiever and I've been career oriented for the most part of my life. I know there's a saying where folks on their deathbed would never say "I wish I could work another hour," but I don't know anything else besides work. I definitely need a hobby and I feel bad at times when I resent my kids because I can't do what I was able to do before.

you guys are doing it all wrong. take it from us Asian folks. it's called the finger test. the amount of water above the rice should come up to the first line on your finger as you're touching the rice. yes you have to stick your finger in the pot.

having grown up where our main staple was rice, my parents never made burnt or soggy rice. oh and having a rice cooker prob helped as well.

sdotsen | 7 years ago | on: You might not need Kubernetes

You prob dodged a bullet then. We give out take home exercises (not my idea but whatever), and we tell the client we don't care which config mgmt you use just pick something you're comfortable with. We use TF+Ansible but we would never frown upon work that's something using Salt, Chef or CFEngine.

I remember when I interviewed with them, they were adament about catching up with AWS. I asked what they thought of Linode and they said "not in our radar." They billed themselves as an AWS competitor but I just don't see it.

For me it's going to the store and getting all the ingredients. Either I can't find it (obscure ones) or they come in bulk and I can't consume all of it after making the meals.

I don't use any of these meal prep services, but I know people who do and they love it.

Can anyone confirm if they brought back the ability to select a wifi/Bluetooth connection via a drop-down from the swipe down option? You know, without having to click and go into the screen to select the device you want to connect to.
