Hushmail is NOT secure or private [1] . The sentence "even an employee with access to their servers can’t get the actual data of the email" is false. Do not use.

Edit: Adblock Plus allows certain "acceptable ads" (read: companies pay Adblock Plus to get whitelisted) and this feature is turn on by default. Use the fork Adblock Edge [2]

I also use Zim.

The nice thing is that Zim uses plain .txt files without the need of a database. So you can also view and edit your notes/pages using any text editor instead of Zim itself. Making backups is also very easy this way.

I keep these text files in sync across my devices using owncloud. That way I can also use it on my smartphone by just viewing the plain text. No extra apps necessary.

Use a cloudservice to sync the database file of Keepass. I use ownCloud for this. Then have the KeepassX portable version on a USB stick or just download it from any computer connected to the internet.

Open-source and self-hosted (when using owncloud). Works for me!

spectrum | 12 years ago | on: Show HN: TipperCoin - Send Bitcoins over Twitter

I am getting tired of all this dogecoin hype. This altcoin is not innovative, does not solve a problem that bitcoin has and was in fact created to mock all the altcoins. Yes it's funny (for the first 5 minutes) but tell me the added value? You think it's good for tipping because it's almost worthless?

The beauty of bitcoin is that you CAN type out long decimals. The beauty is that you can USE bitcoin to pay for goods and services. Bitcoin was like Dogecoin 5 years ago, why are you trying to repeat this proces?

If you look at the site of Tippercoin, you see that it is also possible to send for example a beer ($4) in bitcoin. Seems pretty easy to type, not?

The way I see it is that most of the altcoins are created by and for people who think they have missed the Bitcoin-boat and are stuck with their old mining hardware. Hoping that their altcoin will take off, by pumping and hyping it everywhere including Hacker News, so they can make some easy money.

It's all about connecting the dots. They want to gather as much information as possible and try to get a better picture of what each individual thinks, does and his/her social ties. The forums are just a piece of the puzzle.

This is the most important sentence I think:

According to the document the Dutch “are looking at marrying the forum data with other social network info, and trying to figure out good ways to mine the data that they have.”

The posts for one individual on one forum are maybe not that interesting. But by connecting this data to the data of his/her other internet activities, you get the total information awareness idea. E.g. Facebook, Gmail, other forums accounts, Whatsapp messages, websites visited etc.

I am sure this guy is still living with his parents judging by the stuff he owns. If you live on your own you NEED things like a refrigerator, a stove, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, kitchen knife, lamps, a table, chairs, the list can go on and on.

Downloading a backup from your Facebook account before deleting it let's you save all of your valuable information. If you then choose to never open this backup, well I guess the information is not THAT valuable for you.

Deleting my Facebook was very easy and straightforward. 1) downloading the backup. 2) permanently deleted my account, not deactivate . 3) communication to my friends I no longer use Facebook and how they can reach me. I still recieve invitations and photo's via IM and mail, no big deal!

Good advice, but don't you think there is a possible danger in you not hearing outside noises? There is a reason we have ears you know, to alert us in case of danger when it is not necessarily visible to the eye.
