To me it seems insane that a doctor should care about the price of necessary medicines they're prescribing.
If the insurance is available, and so good, then they should handle the payment stuff. A doctor should be learning about treatment, research and patients, not which company has the cheapest drugs this month.

Sure, but there are obvious cases which turn these averages into really different personal-stories.
One case is the obvious cost of having a child in America, even with insurance some people pay thousands of dollars.

I think that's an America-centric view. In a lot of places in Europe it wouldn't matter what neighborhood you lived in - the schools available would be equally good.

Details of public/private keys, hashes, etc are important, but at the core the idea is simple.

Given the number of people who commented here with their own stories I wonder if it actually is rare.
I imagine you only find out if you're undergoing x-rays, operations and similar.
If there are no obvious side-effects there could be a lot more flipped-people out there.

There are several "celebrity" bloggers who keep this trend alive. I find it annoying too, but better that than some of the other approaches which involve constant! Exclamation!! Marks everywhere!!!

For example "I read to my son" could be pronounced two different ways depending on tense. "I read", vs. "I red".
There are other examples too, off the top of my head "I polish my shoes", vs. "I have a polish friend.". Or "the bow of a boat", vs. "at the end of the play the actors take a bow".
