This. Vim is great for simple scripts and small projects, but once a project grows beyond a certain size I really prefer an environment with more robust refactoring like Intellij.

on: In a World Shaped by College Dropouts, Education is the Next Bubble
This hit the nail on the head. It's not knowledge; it's the connections you make that you're paying the premium for. Also, at least for the foreseeable future, a degree will still be necessity for most entry-level jobs. So while online education will continue to improve, old-school degree programs are a legacy system that will continue to be prevalent in spite of the growing cost.

on: The Choices Are Fake and the Truth Is All Made Up
As a college junior myself, I am tired of the perpetuation of the unrealistic (and false) idea that if you don't start a company right out of school, you're doomed to failure. Thank you, Dan, for being the voice of reason.

on: The Programming Books That Meant The Most To Me
In addition to all the other patterns books mentioned, Head First Design Patterns is a great intro the subject. I think you will get more out of GoF if read this first.

on: The Programming Books That Meant The Most To Me
The professor for my software engineering class mentioned it briefly at the beginning of the semester, but it was never brought up again. If you don't do a lot of learning on your own, you're probably not going to encounter it.

on: Learn on someone else's dime
I don't think it's a question of better or more exclusive learning opportunities. I think the op is arguing that you can gain the same skills and experience you would get starting a company at 20 by trial-and-error, but without the lost income, time, and career progress.

As a junior in an ECE/CS program I cannot recommend this book enough. It will teach you things most classes can't/won't.

on: The Gift
"Statistically, there does not appear to be much of a genetic component to pancreatic cancer, but still, I worried. How much longer do I have? Could there be a tumor growing inside of me at this very moment?"
I lost my father to pancreatic cancer when I was only 18. Even though I'm only 20, this is something I constantly have in the back of my head. Although I don't live each day exactly like it's my last, I no longer stress out over small things and am a lot more questioning of the decisions I make. Death really does strip away everything doesn't matter.

on: Your Goals Are Holding You Back
This is exactly how I approach improving in programming.
Since I didn't really get into it until I started college, I always feel like I'm playing catchup to everyone else.
The trick to making progress is to not get discouraged.
You'd be surprised how far "do a little bit each day" will get you.

Same. I've been playing around with Light Table for about a month now, and I'm completely hooked on Clojure.

on: At ‘Hacker Hostels,’ Living on the Cheap and Dreaming of Digital Glory
I concur. I am currently staying at the Mountain View house while doing a summer internship at a startup. It is difficult to find short-term housing on craigslist or other rental sites as most landlords are looking for long-term leases. Luckily, I was able to stay with friends while looking for housing and was fortunate to find an open spot at Chez JJ. Though $1000/month can seem pricey, for the location (biking distance to my office, grocery stores, YC, and HackerDojo) and community of hackers and entrepreneurs, you would be hard pressed to find a more ideal housing arrangement.
