on: Backsliding on free expression around the world needs to end
Hmm. I wonder why they are still risking their lives to attempt to get to the west if it's such a morally bankrupt hell hole.

on: Apple AirPods: iPhone accessory or the next big thing?
Here's some of the Apple gear from my family.
Macbook Pro from 2008: Still boots
iPhone 4 (2010): Still functioning (although obviously does not run latest OS)
iPhone 5s (2013): Still functioning (running iOS 12 just fine)
iPhone 7: (2016): Still flawless

on: Show HN: I built a podcast app that skips over the ads
My problem with podcast ads is how repetitive they are. I'm at a point where I hate squarespace so much because nearly every podcast I listen to is sponsored by them. Same goes for Simplisafe and ZipRecruiter. It's extremely tiring and I would consider this app for automating skipping of ads because of this reason.

It's been a long time since I've looked at Rails. Is there anything similar to Railscasts (free or paid) but up to date with latest Rails features?

on: The video game industry can't go on like this
From the article:
> Artists who work on gory cinematics integral to games like Mortal Kombat suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Is it really someone else's fault if someone chooses to work on a game like Mortal Kombat and then complains about having to create graphics like this?
Can we please introduce some agency into people's lives and stop constantly blaming society for issues?

on: New for AWS Lambda: Use Any Programming Language and Share Common Components
> You can generally resolve it yourself by poking seldom used functions to keep them hot.
We've tried this and it helps somewhat but when AWS attempts to scale your function based on load, cold starts re-appear. We've moved away from Lambdas where a dependable response time is required.

on: Facebook reportedly discredited critics by linking them to George Soros
The overwhelming majority of migration into Europe is not due to any war or terror. It is economic migration primarily from sub-Saharan Africa which is why you comparatively see so few women and children among the migrants.

on: How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
Wow. So asking someone for a bit of self control and being a responsible adult is now considered an unreasonable request. Because it’s so difficult to at least not have unprotected sex when you know you’re not in a position to support a child.
We are truly lost as a society.

Everything you listed under your general issues section is my exact experience when running Linux. I don't seem to have any of those issues on OSX.

on: TV advertising has hit a wall thanks to streaming options like Netflix
Exactly. I think NBA League Pass cuts out the advertising from the local tv networks during timeouts and half time to show the in arena feed (kiss cam, etc). But those are often times ads now as well.

This is my fear as well. As a Californian who's looking to move to Texas at some point in the future, I really hope the people leaving aren't taking "California values" to Texas with them.

on: Signal Foundation
On top of the myriad of missing features that for example Telegram has, the UI/UX for Signal (at least on the iOS app) is far behind. The app feels laggy and slow in comparison to Telegram or Messages (only other apps I use). It has giant text bubbles with large padding which IMO looks terribly ugly. Also, Telegram now has dark mode which I find very useful. And as mentioned, as silly as gif support is, it's a nice feature to have. If only Telegram used Signal's encryption by default.

I did exactly this 2 years ago and it was just as painless as you described. Took a few months of slowly migrating various accounts to new email via forwarding. I’m just annoyed at myself for not having done it sooner.

Advertising. But not via tracking and personalization. They show ads to you based on the keywords you used to search and don’t follow you around the web.

This. I wish Signal's own native apps had the user experience of Telegram.
