Apple's status page is showing no problems (all green).
This is a really bad look for Apple.

I was trying to find one!
I’m going to have to give this product a try!
gt565k | 2 years ago | on: Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
It refused to generate images of white people.
For example:
People would ask it to generate something like a picture of a German couple in 1820 and it would spit out images of Asian and Black couples.
Pictures of the founding fathers would also include weird things like native Americans and other ethnicities.
Other historical prompts would result in the same output - no white people.
Basically the AI went woke af.
gt565k | 2 years ago | on: Ask HN: How Do You Budget?
It’s easier to calculate how much you want to save and save it upfront then the rest of the money can be spent.
Max out 401k - money never touched your bank account
Split direct deposit so a portion or multiple portions go to your investment account and/or savings account
The rest goes into checking account to pay for bills and lifestyle expenses.
Save the money up front and never let it touch the checking account!
You can start by giving yourself some buffer into your checking account and later dialing down those numbers in your direct deposit config.
It’s much easier to do it this way and not worry about every single expense line item. Just calculate how much you think you can save and never let that money touch your checking account. Evaluate every quarter and adjust the numbers at the front accordingly.
gt565k | 2 years ago | on: Ask HN: Where do you live? What's good or bad about it?
Pros: No natural disasters, fairly affordable, good schools.
2-3 hour flight to the Bahamas / Caribbean.
Cons: Summer weather sucks as it is too humid and hot. No winter / snow. Proximity to beach and mountains for skiing sucks.
Cant really enjoy the outdoor weather due to the sticky humidity most time of the year.

gt565k | 2 years ago | on: Ask HN: If you've resigned from a previous job, what was the reason?
2. Getting stuck on a boring project
3. Horrible culture fit
4. New exciting opportunity which consequently = more money

Currently dealing with some 13 year old objective C code for a mobile app that’s gonna require a major rewrite cause it looks like it was written by someone who should have never been writing code in the first place

gt565k | 2 years ago | on: Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
Obviously it will give a different estimate than stop and go traffic and starting the vehicle without pre-conditioning the battery.
Tesla does a great job with their scheduling functionality that lets you pre-condition battery before you leave and even when you near a supercharger to maximize charging efficiency of the battery.
gt565k | 2 years ago | on: Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
The estimates are based on driving on a flat road at the speed limit.
Even my Lexus SUV can get 24mpg driving on 35-45mph roads vs 16-19 in the city or going to the mountains where elevation increases.
People's understanding of range is just not quite there yet whether it's for an ICE vehicle or an EV.

I first heard of Kevin Mitnick in the early 2000's when I was watching "The Broken" with Kevin Rose and he interviewed Mitnick in one of the episodes.
I was 14-15 years old at the time! Wow!
gt565k | 2 years ago | on: Twitter now requires an account to view tweets
https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1674887204580073474?s=20 ---- @elonmusk
"Several hundred organizations (maybe more) were scraping Twitter data extremely aggressively, to the point where it was affecting the real user experience.
What should we do to stop that? I’m open to ideas. 5:06 PM · Jun 30, 2023"
https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1674942336583757825?s=20 ---- @nearcyan
"so @elonmusk now that twitter blocks all requests that are not logged in, tweets can no longer be embedded in most chat apps
I'd strongly suggest reconsidering the UX+growth tradeoffs made here (take note how tiktok, youtube, etc, do not need this despite much higher b/w req!)"
----
@elonmusk
"This will be unlocked shortly. Per my earlier post, drastic & immediate action was necessary due to EXTREME levels of data scraping.
Almost every company doing AI, from startups to some of the biggest corporations on Earth, was scraping vast amounts of data.
It is rather galling to have to bring large numbers of servers online on an emergency basis just to facilitate some AI startup’s outrageous valuation."
