Look what happened with corn subsidies. Now corn is in EVERYTHING we eat. Literally everything. The beef, chicken, and pork you eat has all been fed corn. Every processed food has corn starch or corn syrup or some other product of corn. Most of the words you can't pronounce in the ingredients list are derivatives of corn. And it's all because of ridiculous bills and subsidies and money getting thrown around in big agro. Recommended Read: Omnivores Dilemma

Yep! It's so much more powerful to show vs. tell.

"To date — the ‘unlock all’ has been our highest grossing option." Love this.

And although it sounds so simple (just add a button!) there's really more to the success of it behind the scenes and you did great job highlighting those factors (ie: perceived value - convenience, etc.)

Super motiving post :)

joelle | 12 years ago | on: Louis CK on why his kids don't have smartphones

Haha that's so true. Phones have definitely become this replacement for any tiny moment of feeling alone. Why else do people take them in the bathroom and go on facebook while they sit on the toilet?! We're all becoming more and more averse to any sense of feeling or being alone - even if for only a few minutes. Amazing to think about all the little ways we do it when you stop and actually think about it for a minute. Love Louis CK!

"Eggs, for example, can be consumed three to five weeks after purchase, even though the "use by" date is much earlier."

This grosses me out. Especially given the number of food-borne illnesses in this country every year I'd much rather be safe than sorry. And spend 3 bucks on some new eggs.

[CDC estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of food-borne diseases.]

joelle | 12 years ago | on: The Dribbblisation of Design

"Design starts at the top of a company with the company mission. Then the company vision. It’s very hard to do great design in an organisation without a clear and actionable mission and vision. Don’t underestimate the importance of this. If your company lacks a clear mission, make it your job to facilitate the creation of one."

This is so true. It's way to easy to get lost in creating beautiful designs, oohing and ahhing at little neat interactions, etc. But if it's not fulfilling the initial goal of what you're trying to accomplish it's sadly a waste of time and resources. That's not to say you can't accomplish both (beautiful design that also meets the goals of the app) - but it's a lot harder than it sounds. And very easy to get derailed. Setting up some periodic checkpoints along the way to keep checking back that you're still on target can definitely help.

"I thought I had escaped the service industry for the ‘freedom’ of freelance work. But — I never left the service industry."

So true. I don't care what business you're in. You're still in the service business. And the people who do the best (for the most part) are those who actually care about their customers. Period.

joelle | 12 years ago | on: Why every entrepreneur needs to learn to code (something)

Yup. Totally. It's really hard to do the things that don't pay off now - especially when you're struggling to get started growing a business. But if you're able to carve out at least some of your time for longer-term goals I think the payoff is going to be huge.

joelle | 12 years ago | on: Five years ago, Stack Overflow launched

As a new developer, stack overflow has been an invaluable resource. My boyfriend (who's been a developer for many years now) always tells me I don't know how nice I have it every time he sees me open stack overflow up to figure something out. "In my day... I had to walk to school in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways..." But although I don't know from personal experience how much harder things were pre- stack overflow - I can certainly appreciate it! It's taken a lot of the headache out of learning for me and is a great safety net when I'm unsure.

"But I made a decision to stop right there and then. I didn’t want to wait until Monday, or until we’d run out of crisps in the cupboard. I was putting an end to it."

This is so true... why do we always say we'll start something on Monday? I'll start eating better... on Monday. I'll start my new workout routine... on Monday. Where did this come from? Why is it so hard to make the same commitment to yourself today? Congrats on making up your mind and following through! Super inspiring!

This is so, so important. The people you surround yourself with (and this is just as true personally as it is professionally) really shape who you become. Want to do amazing things? Surround yourself with others who already are (or are at least trying really hard).
