on: A practical guide to quitting your smartphone
This is like saying to addicts “Just stop smoking crack”.
Everyone knows smoking crack is bad for you. A lot of people want to quit but are unable to no matter how much “self discipline” they have. And app developers have teams of people dedicated to making sure you stay on these apps longer and longer.
Now imagine your dealer is in your pocket 24/7.

on: Magicians less prone to mental disorders than other artists, finds research
That would be an interesting study though. For true occult practitioners I think you’re likely to see even less mental disorders since (if they are true students of the occult) they would understand that the mind (and indeed EVERY aspect of 3D reality) is simply a construct of belief systems.

on: Magicians less prone to mental disorders than other artists, finds research
Thanks for those resources, I’m going to have fun digging into those. But still, wouldn’t the link between artistry and self destruction be more a function of depression and not psychopathy?
But even that is just surface level I think. What is it that makes depressed people artists? Or vice versa.

Yep, I certainly have. With just two trackers I’ve got access to pretty much every TV show and movie in existence.

Thanks for that link! I’ve recently gotten into metal (Holy crap what an awesome genre of music I’ve neglected to explore my whole life! I feel like a kid in a candy shop hearing all of these new amazing sounds) and started learning guitar because of it.
Having someone share their curated music is way more powerful in my opinion than some algorithmically generated playlist.

The best reminder app I have ever used is a sticky note on my bathroom mirror.

I’m still using a 2015 MacBook Pro. It still runs fine. I’m looking at replacing it with an M3 MacBook Air when they come out though.

What does “draw worth a damn” even mean? Personally, I much prefer to see people’s unique perspective on things through their art rather than just another hyper-realistic rendering of something I can already see in hyper realism.

The level of disrespect Tesla is showing with this move is just insane to me. “Fuck you for spending tens of thousands on our product. Here’s a stick.”

on: A new study looks at how exercise can help alleviate anxiety and depression
I’ve had major clinical depression for the last 15 years or so. The first 4 months of this year was the lowest I’ve ever been. During that time though I was going to the gym 6 days a week doing weight lifting and then I would cycle 50km a day on top of that. All of it was on autopilot however, my depression just wouldn’t allow me to focus on anything but it.
Luckily I had been building up the habit for years in advance but that was the most I had ever exercised and it was also the most I had ever been depressed. In my case I don’t think the exercise helped at all. Perhaps if I hadn’t of been exercising maybe I wouldn’t even be here now though… I’m not entirely sure. Finding the right medication and getting therapy has been what has really helped me. With those two I can see an almost day and night difference but with the exercise I noticed no difference at all. At least I had a great physique though!

My wife and I are planning to have our first child soon and device addiction is something we’re worried of happening. I’m keen to hear from parents on HN how you go about managing devices with children. Do you have any recommendations, anecdotes, or resources?

on: You’re Not Imagining It–Job Hunting Is Getting Worse
I (unfortunately) worked for a Big4 and the hiring process took 4 months, 7 interviews in total (3 with 3 different partners) and completing a case study.
And in the end all I did was make slide decks. And then I progressed onto how to tell people how to make slide decks. Not a thing mentioned in the interviews was necessary in my day to day work. It was one of the worst working experiences in my life.

The site left the exact same taste in my mouth. It comes off as holier than thou.
