on: The entire win32 API in JavaScript
Windows script host (cscript) allows you to execute js files in addition to vbscript (vbs). This is particularly useful in extending the functionality of batch files. This can be useful in a lot of circumstances build process, installation etc.

on: Ask HN: Contract-less Contract work
1. Most definitely yes. An understood agreement is all well and good until one of your clients decides not to pay. If you keep working for while I assure you that it will happen.
2. Ask the company you will doing the work for to write up a contract. Read through it if you find anything that would need a lawyers attention then you can hire one.
3. You probably should look for corporate lawyer locally, ideally someone who can understands your situation and not charge you for every second.

on: Fighting to Shut Out the Real India
Yes you are right, India and the U.S. have a lot in common. The big difference here in the U.S. is the larger middle class compared to India. The other two big factors are corruption which is much more widespread and the caste system which won't go away anytime soon.
Despite all that I believe India has moved in the right direction in the last 20 years. I couldn't imagine how it would have been if not for the reforms of the nineties, which I personally believe has benefited all. Yes the rich have gotten richer but the opportunities that didn't exist before do now for the middle class and the poor. People don't have to depend on the government to provide jobs.

on: The Atlas Shrugged Trailer
I will be very surprised if objectivism or for that matter any philosophy , can be condensed to a movie. The fact that Ayn Rand chose to convey her ideas, although not all of it was entirely new at that point, in the form of a novel, made it more accessible to people but still left a lot of question unanswered.

on: Apple has paid over $2 billion to app developers, $12 billion to record labels
I don't think it is fair to include free apps in the analysis and then ignore the revenue that may have been generated with ads. The article does end with a note saying that $2b was paid out in 31 months for apps compared to the music.

It appears number portability and iPod Touch support is not on their priority list. I have no clue why. With those two features, personally, I would be free from cell phone carriers.

In case you are interested in developing on the Microsoft platform instead of Apache and MySQL, Web Platform installer is the way to go. Makes it a lot easier to install Visual Studio Express, ASP.Net MVC which otherwise is a real pain sometimes.

Selling is hard. Without knowing the product, the sales he has generated it would be hard for us to tell you whether or not you should be worried. You should talk to him bring up your concerns. He will probably bring up a few of his own. The solution may be as simple as you don't have a sales team or the current sales team is insufficient.

on: Bach, Allard leaving Microsoft
With that reasoning Ballmer should also be gone. The bottom line for MS may look good but after a decade of him not being able to come up with a game plan for mobile devices, which is where the future is, I am surprised the board hasn't shown the door for him. Clearly at this point their usual approach to licensing their OS to mobile devices in large quantities for cheap isn't going work (Android is free) but they still seem to be pursuing the same strategy. Pretty soon it might be hard to keep MS relevant. With all the talent they have a strong leader is what they need to turn them around, I don't see that being Ballmer.
