As someone coming from a city who's had this problem for years, I can just say it can get better.

We've petitioned, protested, lobbied and in the end it happened.

The city is Zenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the end, as success can often be, it was so anti-climatic (no pun intended). One year it just got better, we felt it and went on with our lives.

Building on this, his barbell method implies allocating a large part of one’s portfolio to low-risk assets, a small portion to high-risk assets, and none to medium-risk assets

mustafabisic1 | 3 years ago | on: Tell HN: The regret of parenting and how to handle it

Thanks for sharing. These positive experiences will help people be more convinced it can be done.

On the flip side, for the people who are struggling, this might make them feel even worse about themselves.

How can we help them?

Do you know any examples of people who struggled, but then turned it around?

I guess these guys you mentioned struggled at one point right

mustafabisic1 | 3 years ago | on: Tell HN: The regret of parenting and how to handle it

I agree with you, but there are real people having these thoughts and feelings rule their life.

I can't lie that I never get a feeling like this, but it often just bounces of me as I have a similar thinking.

Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it.

I enjoyed the comments section much more than the article itself (even though it's a great article)

There is something magical to me about seeing other people's experiences (especially positive ones)

P.S. I've noticed we're in a need for more streamlined info on being a parent in the world we live in so I created a weekly newsletter for remote-working parents - https://thursdaydigest.com/

Most of my subscribers are coming from comments just like this.

mustafabisic1 | 3 years ago | on: Ask HN: How to find a remote entry job? (EU)

I'm a parent of two kids and have a lot of colleagues who are in a similar position.

It's a specific set of challenges having kids roaming around and tackling challenging work tasks.

Sometimes you appreciate just knowing there's somebody similar sharing the journey.

Thanks for the question.

mustafabisic1 | 3 years ago | on: Ask HN: How to find a remote entry job? (EU)

I had a big success finding awesome remote jobs in email marketing when I was searching for it a year ago. with a simple trick What you do is just Google a few of the big hiring tools companies usually use: Greenhouse Lever So it would be something like this for me "site:greenhouse.io email marketing remote" Here is how a search would look like for my job now: https://imgur.com/a/lqqNhe8 You'll find fantastic jobs that might not be so well advertised.

P.S. Started a newsletter for remote working parents - https://thursdaydigest.com/ hope this helps on your journey

mustafabisic1 | 3 years ago | on: Tell HN: Beware 'Ungrowth' in Your Job

Reminds me of a company I had the most fun working for.

One of the basic principle was you can only be world-class in your natural strengths.

Some of others were: - Try to ask why as less as possible as it's getting your rationalisations and emotional most of the time - Ask what might I do differently instead - Risk, trust, honesty triangle - These need to be equal at all times for teams to be effective - Never judge and never say bad/good. Works/doesn't work are alternatives

mustafabisic1 | 3 years ago | on: Too Much Motivation Affects Our Decision-Making

As a remote-working parent I've experinced this a lot over the last few years. The highs don't happen so often, but I noticed when they do, I work at a higher pace, but tend to make mistakes.

For me the key has been to notice I was on a high and make sure to double-check the work done.

P.S. I'm sharing helpful resources and insightful thoughts about being a remote-working parent in my weekly newsletter - welcome - https://thursdaydigest.com/

P.P.S. Loved this quote below:

‘‘They also reveal that the level of motivation does not only impact decision-making but also the perception of sensory information, which leads to the decision’’, explains Carl Petersen, Full Professor at the Brain Mind Institute of EPFL and co-senior author in the study.

mustafabisic1 | 3 years ago | on: Mud boosts the immune system

This explains a lot about my childhood when my parents would just let me be outside all the time.

Also it reminds me of an interesting conclusion somebody had here on HN that it's weird how we insctinctively know how each thing around us would taste.

Like if I told you do you know how the door would taste if you licked it. A taste would come in your mind.

Fascinating stuff. This article is definitely going into my next week's newsletter for remote working parents (https://thursdaydigest.com/). Even though most of my subscribers are from HN.

mustafabisic1 | 3 years ago | on: Performance reviews don’t assess performance

I love the article and agree with a lot of it, the only thing is that the action steps are a bit vague.

It's especially challenging for teams who have a hard time finding measurable targets. Like the brand team and the content team in my company have a bit harder time finding the numbers.

And although they have a great reputation and action steps, I can still imagine how it feels when everybody else lays out their numbers.

P.S. I'm writing a weekly newsletter for remote-working parents. Check it https://thursdaydigest.com/
