At HandUp, you’ll have the satisfaction of seeing your work directly impact thousands of lives. We’re using technology as a tool for human empathy. Passion for solving big, complex social problems is a must-have. You don’t need any specific qualifications, but we do look for people who exhibit these qualities:

* Experience - this isn't your first rodeo. You've been doing this for a while and can tell us some good stories.

Our stack is Bootstrap / jQuery, Python / flask, MySQL. You don’t need to be an expert in those technologies but you should have a proven ability to pick up new skills quickly. You ideally have some experience in automated testing methods and deployment tools. Metrics are important to us so deep knowledge of funnels and Google Analytics and/or mixpanel are a plus.

Kinda cool that Chrome added pointer lock, but the responsiveness of moving the cursor around the screen is pretty shit. Maybe it's mac mouse acceleration's fault?

zacwitte | 13 years ago | on: Make Patent Trolls Pay All Costs If They Lose

The world where loser pays is not so perfect. If I as an independent inventor sue apple for infringing on my patent and they win simply because they have unlimited legal war chest, then I would get stuck with millions of dollars worth of legal fees. That threat alone is enough to stop smaller patent owners from rightfully defending their intellectual property.

zacwitte | 13 years ago | on: A Letter from Tim Cook on Maps

Yeah the apple maps were disappointing but the apology letter yields to the masses. It doesn't show leadership. Always look forward.

zacwitte | 14 years ago | on: Arguments Against Owning a Home and Specialization of Labor

Good points. In an ideal world, the principal problem you describe should be dealt with by free market forces. I choose the apartment based on cost and quality. If the landlord uses low-quality materials or doesn't maintain the property I'm less willing to pay the high rent and might move out.

Rent's aren't completely predictable, but home ownership is far less predictable. What happens when you discover there's a leak in your roof and you need to shell out $10,000 to get it repaired? What happens when the Whole Foods moves into your neighborhood and your land values goes up so you're stuck with higher taxes, or mortgage rates go up and you have to pay a higher interest.

zacwitte | 14 years ago | on: What SimpleGeo could have been

I have to disagree with most of this except the data problem. Building out a cloud database and API specific for storing and querying geo data is not enough of a value proposition. It's just not that hard of a problem to roll your own, which is what most serious applications would do. They're the ones with money. In fact, in some cases using SimpleGeo is a limitation because it doesn't have the robustness of full databases. The part I will agree with you on is the data problem. There's a huge amount of great geo data out there with no clean repository. I kept telling them to focus on data and sell that, not the service. Oh well. Someone (factual?) will get it instead.

zacwitte | 15 years ago | on: Ask HN: Do CS students enjoy C anymore?

I enjoy C because I like strongly typed languages, explicit code as apposed to ambiguous typeless languages. I haven't, however, found many companies hiring C programmers. I've been working for web startups in San Francisco for a while and have talked with a lot of developers at events and it seems to me that there is less and less focus on optimization in general, which is why there is less interest in C. The fact is that C becomes less relevant by the day. Rails and python developers are in high demand - C not so much.
